The Mediterranean Diet
A way of eating and living
Hvar represents Croatia in UNESCO's transnational listing of the Mediterranean diet, celebrating olive oil, fish, wine, and the table as a social ritual.
The Mediterranean diet is much more than a menu: it is the whole chain of growing, fishing, preparing and, above all, sharing food that shapes daily life along the Mediterranean. Olive oil, fresh fish, vegetables, wild herbs and local wine, eaten slowly and together.
When UNESCO expanded the transnational inscription in 2013, the island communities of Hvar and Brač were chosen to represent Croatia, a recognition that the island's konobas, family vineyards and fishing traditions keep this way of living authentically alive.
On Hvar you taste the listing itself: gregada fish stew, olive oils pressed from centuries-old groves on the Stari Grad Plain, and wines from indigenous grapes like Bogdanuša and Plavac Mali.
