Hvar Film Festival is turning the town of Hvar into a true cinema stage. From September 10 to 14, 2025, the town squares, the Arsenal and the legendary Veneranda welcome film lovers and professionals from across Europe. The festival quickly became an important platform for short films. It connects audiences and filmmakers in a unique open air atmosphere.
The opening ceremony took place on September 10 on Hvar’s main square, Pjaca. The evening started with a concert of film music. After that, the audience watched the Croatian film The Summer We Left Behind. The night closed with a performance by singer Jakov Jozinović. A large crowd gathered and enjoyed the first taste of the festival.
Competition screenings happen on September 11, 12 and 13 at 8:30 p.m. in the Veneranda open air cinema. Tickets are free but must be collected online or at the Hvar Tourist Board office. In case of rain the program moves to the Arsenal.
The program presents 15 short films from Croatia and Europe. Titles include The Summer We Left Behind, Mak, La macchina di Renato, Pocket Money, Majonezë, The Boy With The Skin, More opsena and Funcut. Genres range from coming of age stories to strong dramas. After the screenings, filmmakers meet the audience for conversations and Q&A sessions.
The Jury
A three member jury decides on the awards. It includes Croatian producer Matej Merlić, Serbian director Stevan Filipović and Italian producer Alex Lopreino.
The industry program adds another dimension to the festival. Sunny Shorts Film Market and Actor’s Hub gather producers, directors and young actors. Workshops, masterclasses, panels and practical sessions take place in the Arsenal. Young actors practice in photography and video sessions. Producers and directors share ideas about distribution, financing and the future of short films. These events show that Hvar is not only a stage for screenings but also a place where new projects start.
The festival ends on September 14 with the award ceremony and the special Hvar Matinee program. The closing evening offers one more chance to enjoy the unique atmosphere that the festival brings to Hvar.
Experience Hvar During the Festival
Hvar Film Festival is more than a chance to watch films. During the day visitors stroll through the old town, swim at nearby beaches or explore the Stari Grad Plain. In the evening they gather at Veneranda, sit on the stone terraces and enjoy films with a view of the sea. The town now breathes with a special rhythm. The festival creates a mix of culture, beauty and community.
Debonda supports guests during the festival with transfers, accommodation, private tours and restaurant reservations. The goal is to make the experience of both the festival and the island complete. Free tickets, cinematic stories and direct encounters with filmmakers make Hvar Film Festival an event to remember.
